A large superconducting magnet is not a component that technicians can lift out, repair on a bench, and reinstall by the end of a shift.

Access is an engineering problem

Cooling lines, supports, shielding, diagnostics, and neighboring magnets occupy the same constrained volume. A repair sequence must account for every tool path and temporary load.

Engineers build full-scale mock-ups to practice movements, test cameras, and measure whether a remote manipulator can apply force without damaging adjacent hardware.

Proving the repair

The tool must also collect evidence. Electrical tests, images, leak checks, and dimensional measurements are planned into the sequence so that the team can distinguish a successful intervention from a hidden defect.

Designing for the next machine

Maintenance rehearsals feed back into future facilities. A few centimeters of additional clearance or a better-positioned connector can change the feasibility of a repair years later.
