From a boat, the kelp bed appears to occupy one continuous patch of coast. Underwater, it breaks into ridges, channels, shaded canopies, and exposed clearings, each with a slightly different thermal history.
Mapping at the scale of habitat
Researchers are combining fixed temperature loggers with mobile sensors carried by divers and small autonomous vehicles. The goal is to identify places where cold water repeatedly wells up or remains trapped near the seafloor.
Those pockets may reduce heat stress for kelp, invertebrates, and juvenile fish. But a cool reading is not automatically a refuge. Low oxygen or weak food supply can erase the apparent benefit.
From map to restoration
Restoration teams increasingly want evidence about where transplanted kelp has the best chance of surviving the next extreme season, not just where it grew historically.
Fine-scale maps can guide that choice, provided they include repeated measurements and do not confuse one cool afternoon with a stable feature.
A moving target
The most useful monitoring programs treat refuges as dynamic. A change in currents, storm exposure, or canopy density can shift the pattern within a season.
