Reading a thinning outline
When a planet crosses its star, a small fraction of starlight passes through any surrounding gas. Certain wavelengths dim more strongly if hydrogen or helium is escaping.
Those signals are faint and easy to confuse with active starspots, so astronomers repeat observations across several transits.
Evolution as a population story
One planet can suggest a mechanism. A population can test it. Researchers compare planet size, age, orbit, and stellar radiation to see where atmospheres survive.
The result is less a photograph of a leak than a demographic argument about how planets change.
