The glacier does not care that a robot is elegant. It cares whether the machine can survive abrasion, cold, water, pressure, and a radio link that disappears at the worst possible moment.
Less Hero, More Instrument
The most useful field robot may never look dramatic. It inches into a cavity, maps a wall, samples temperature, and returns enough data to justify the risk.
The Design Constraint
Soft bodies help with impacts, but they introduce control challenges. Ice adds its own problems: slipping, freezing, and uncertain geometry.
Why It Matters
Crevasses, moulins, and subglacial channels shape how meltwater moves. Robots that can enter those spaces safely could improve models of glacier response.
