Why sodium is interesting
Sodium is abundant and can support cell chemistries that avoid some materials used in common lithium-ion batteries. The cost advantage is not automatic, because manufacturing yield and scale matter as much as raw materials.
The pilot is testing a system
Operators measure round-trip efficiency, temperature behavior, degradation, availability, and response to dispatch commands. A cell that performs well in a laboratory can still lose value through weak controls or excessive auxiliary power.
Matching chemistry to service
Daily solar shifting, frequency response, and backup capacity impose different cycling patterns. The useful question is not whether sodium-ion is universally better, but where its characteristics align with a specific grid service.
