In the laboratory, a robotic arm can approach a fixed artificial flower from the same angle thousands of times. In a field row, stems bend, petals overlap, and the target moves in the wind.
A softer objective
The prototype’s control system prioritizes gentle contact and quick retreat over perfect positioning. A missed flower is less costly than damage to the plant.
Vision models identify candidate blooms, but the robot also estimates whether a safe approach path exists. Dense leaves and uncertain depth can cause it to skip a target.
Recovery is part of performance
Field testing counts how often the machine recognizes a failed attempt, backs away, and resumes work without human intervention. Those recovery events dominate real operating time.
A narrow research question
The system is designed to study manipulation and perception in irregular biological environments. It is not evidence that machines can replace wild or managed pollinators, whose ecological roles extend far beyond touching flowers.
